A biological method for extracting hydrogen from the atmosphere has been identified by members of the Gustav Berggren group, together with researchers from Australia and the USA, and is published in the journal Nature. The interdisciplinary group of researchers have isolated and mapped a unique variant of a nickel-iron hydrogenase enzyme that not only withstands oxygen, but is also capable of extracting the trace amounts of hydrogen gas present in our atmosphere, thereby supplying the bacterium with energy. The discovery may eventually contribute to a reduced dependence on fossil fuels.

Today, the vast majority of fuels such as ethanol and hydrogen are produced by fossil fuels using petroleum as a raw material. Artificial photosynthesis captures the sun's light using a technique similar to that used in solar cells, adds water and carbon dioxide, and out comes a fuel in the form of a gas or liquid, such as hydrogen or an alcohol. The 2022 CAP workshop was a success!
On September 27 and 28, enthusiastic CAP members gathered at Haga Slott in Enköping for two half-days of intense discussions, idea hatching, future shaping, and fun.

Alina Sekretareva awarded the Gustafsson prize in physics
The Göran Gustafsson prize in physics at Uppsala university is awarded to the CAP member Alina Sekretareva. Her research is focused on understanding of electron transfer processes within (bio)electrocatalysts and on the electrode/catalyst interface at the molecular level and on the exploration of novel concepts for electrocatalytic devices based on this new understanding. The prize is a research grant of 2,75 MSEK.

Peafowl Plasmonics raises 40 MSEK
In seed round led by Industrifonden and the Wallenberg fund Navigare Ventures, the startup company Peafowl Plasmonics, founded by the CAP member Jacinto Sá, has raised enough capital to take the company to the next level.
